Increased number of visitors from UAE and USA

Compared with the same period of 2015, the number of overnight stays by tourists in the city increased by 0.6% over the first six months of this year, bringing the total number between January and June 2016 to 2.6 million.

The Zurich Tourist Board, which announced these figures on Friday, mentioned how there had been a 19% increase in the number of visitors from the United Arab Emirates and a 7.4% increase in the number of tourists from the United States. The highest number of visitors to the city actually come from other parts of Switzerland, and these accounted for as many as 507,700 overnight stays in the first six months of this year, a rise of 6.3%.

This article in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung pointed out that the number of visitors from Germany had fallen by 2.3% and those from France by 1.2%. However, there had been an increase in the number of visitors from the United Kingdom (up by 6.5%), from Spain (+ 6.2%) and from Italy (+5.4%).

On the other hand, there was a fall of -13.9% in the number of visitors from Russia, -13.5% from China as well as a decrease in the number of tourists from Japan (-5.9%) and India (-7.5%), too. The tourist board put this down in part to fear of acts of terrorism. It also thought the fall in the number of Chinese visitors was as a result of stricter entry regulations; they are only allowed to enter Switzerland with biometric visas now. However, with these becoming more readily available in China, the board hoped the number of visitors from there would increase before too long.
