As many as 7,200 flats used as second homes or business apartments

Bearing in mind the shortage of affordable accommodation in the city, it is not unexpected that there has been some criticism about the amount of those flats used as second homes, and thereby only occupied occasionally, or as serviced business apartments. Now estimates show that there are currently as many as 7,200 such flats, or 3.3% out of a total of 218,900.
It was further discovered that the highest proportion of these flats, 12.8% of them, are in the Old City. Neither are they used that regularly. It became known that one flat on Predigerplatz was used by its owners only for the odd night after they had been to the opera, with another flat in the same block used for guests only.
As this article in the Tages-Anzeiger newspaper went on to explain, it was further discovered that flats used as second homes or business apartments were popular, too, in areas such as Seefeld, where the number amounts to 7%. As to the areas around the Zurichberg, namely Fluntern, Hottingen and Hirslanden, 6% of properties there were of this type.
The survey also revealed that that there was a higher-than-average proportion of these apartments in Enge and Wiedikon as well as around Langstrasse and the Escher-Wyss district.
The areas where the fewest such apartments are found include Seebach Affoltern and Schwamendingen.
What should be noted is that flats lived in by students who are still registered in their home municipality, or people who only stay in them during the working week, are not regarded as holiday homes or business apartments.
